Cleanings & Exams

The visit that prevents
the bigger ones.

A steady cleaning-and-exam routine is the simplest, most cost-effective dentistry there is. Every six months, on your schedule, in a calm office that doesn’t rush you.

What happens at your cleaning

Your hygienist takes any needed digital x-rays, removes plaque and tartar from above and below the gum line, polishes your teeth, flosses thoroughly, and applies a fluoride treatment if it’s the right call for you. Most cleanings take 45–60 minutes — longer if it’s been a while since your last visit (no judgment, we’ll just take more time).

What the exam covers

Dr. Sanie reviews your x-rays, checks each tooth for decay or cracks, looks at older fillings and crowns for wear, evaluates your gums, screens for oral cancer, and checks your bite and jaw joint. We answer any questions you have, point out anything to keep an eye on, and recommend treatment only when there’s a clear reason for it.

Why every six months

  • Most cavities and gum problems are easier (and cheaper) to fix when caught early.
  • Plaque hardens into tartar in days — and tartar can only be removed by a hygienist, not a toothbrush.
  • Routine x-rays catch problems hiding between teeth long before they hurt.
  • Six-monthly oral cancer screenings save lives. Truly.

For nervous patients and busy families

Tell us if cleanings have been hard for you in the past — sensitive gums, gag reflex, anxiety, jaw pain after long appointments. We’ll adjust: shorter strokes, more breaks, a slower pace, or splitting the cleaning across two visits. We can also book multiple family members back-to-back to save you a trip.

If you’ve been overdue

A lot of patients come back to the dentist after years away. Your first visit may include a deeper cleaning to catch up on tartar along the gum line — but the goal is always to get you onto a comfortable, twice-a-year rhythm. No lectures.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a dental cleaning cost in Culpeper, VA?

A routine adult cleaning and exam at Culpeper Dental Care typically ranges from $130 to $240 if you're paying out of pocket. Most dental insurance plans cover two cleanings per year at 100%. Virginia Dental Club members get both annual cleanings, exams, and all x-rays included in one flat membership fee.

How often should I get my teeth cleaned?

Most adults benefit from a professional cleaning every six months. Patients with a history of gum disease, heavy plaque buildup, smokers, or those with certain medical conditions may need three- or four-month intervals. Dr. Sanie recommends the schedule that fits your actual mouth, not a calendar default.

What if it's been years since my last cleaning?

You're welcome here without lectures. Your first visit may include a deeper cleaning to catch up on tartar along the gum line — we'll let you know what it'll feel like and how long it'll take. The goal is always to get you onto a comfortable, twice-a-year rhythm from there.

Are x-rays required at every cleaning?

No. We follow ADA guidelines: bitewing x-rays every 6–18 months depending on cavity risk, and a full series every 3–5 years. If you brought recent x-rays from a previous dentist, we'll use those when they're still current.

Will the cleaning hurt if I have sensitive teeth or gums?

Tell us at the start of the visit. We can use a slower pace, shorter strokes, desensitizing paste, and breaks whenever you need them. Many patients with sensitivity find their visits actually get easier once they're back on a regular schedule and the gum tissue gets healthier.

Can I bring my whole family for back-to-back cleanings?

Yes — we often book families together to save a trip. Tell us when you call and we'll find a window that works. Spanish-speaking accommodations are available.
