How it differs from a regular cleaning

A standard cleaning works above and just below the gum line on healthy gums. Periodontal maintenance goes deeper — gently cleaning inside the small pockets that gum disease has created, monitoring their depth over time, and making sure bacteria don’t get a foothold again. It’s usually scheduled every three or four months, instead of every six.

Why three or four months

Research shows that the bacteria responsible for periodontal disease repopulate to harmful levels within about 90 days. By re-cleaning before that point, we stay ahead of the cycle. Most patients find that after a year or two of consistent care, their gums stabilize beautifully — pockets shrink, bleeding stops, and tartar buildup slows.

What the visit includes

• Polishing and a fluoride application when appropriate
• Targeted home-care coaching for trouble spots
