Choosing the Right Dentist
What to look for
when picking a dentist.
Choosing a dentist isn’t a small decision. Here’s an honest guide to what matters — written by a practice that wants you to make a good choice, even if it’s not us.
1. Look for someone who listens before they recommend
A good dentist asks about your history, your concerns, and your goals before telling you what they think you need. If your first visit feels like a sales pitch, that’s a red flag.
2. Check whether they handle most procedures in-house
Many general practices refer out anything beyond cleanings — root canals to one specialist, implants to another, sometimes crowns to a third. That fragmentation slows down your care, increases costs, and forces you to repeat your story at every office. A practice that handles most procedures in-house gives you continuity, faster treatment, and a single relationship with the person responsible for your care.
3. Ask about technology — but care more about the dentist using it
Modern equipment matters. Digital x-rays, intraoral cameras, iTero scanning, and CBCT imaging make diagnosis more accurate and treatment more comfortable. But the best technology in the world won’t make a difference if the dentist doesn’t take time with you. Ask about both.
4. Pay attention to how they handle anxious patients
A dentist who knows how to work with patients who are scared of dentistry is, by definition, a more empathetic dentist. Ask whether they offer nitrous oxide, whether they take time before procedures to explain what’s happening, and whether they’ll stop the moment you raise a hand.
5. Make sure they accept your insurance — or have an alternative
The best dentist in town doesn’t help you if you can’t afford to see them. Look for a practice that accepts most major plans, files claims for you, and has an alternative for patients without insurance — like the Virginia Dental Club.
6. Read the reviews, but read them carefully
A practice with hundreds of 5-star reviews is doing something right. Look at the substance — what specifically are patients saying? Are they mentioning the dentist’s name, talking about feeling heard, describing a specific moment when the practice went above and beyond?
7. Visit the office before you commit
Most practices will let you stop in for a quick look or a no-obligation consultation. Pay attention to how the staff treats you at the front desk, whether the office feels calm or chaotic, and whether you’d actually want to spend an hour in one of the chairs.
