Dental Sealants

A protective shield
for the teeth that work hardest.

Back teeth have deep grooves that brushing can’t always reach. A sealant fills those grooves with a thin, tooth-colored coating — and dramatically lowers the chance of a cavity.

What sealants are

A dental sealant is a thin, tooth-colored coating that bonds into the natural grooves of your back teeth. It seals out food particles, plaque, and acid — keeping bacteria away from the surfaces where most childhood cavities start.

Who they’re for

Sealants are most often placed on children and teens, soon after their permanent molars come in (usually around ages 6 and 12). They can also be a smart option for adults with deep grooves and a history of cavities. If you’ve ever wondered why your kid keeps getting cavities in the same spots, sealants are very likely the answer.

What the visit looks like

  • The tooth is cleaned and dried — no drilling, no anesthesia.
  • A gentle preparation gel is applied for a few seconds.
  • The sealant material is brushed into the grooves.
  • A curing light hardens it in about 20 seconds per tooth.
  • Your child can eat normally on the way home from the appointment.

How long they last

Sealants typically last several years before they need a touch-up, and we check them at each cleaning. Reapplication is quick when needed.

Pairs perfectly with…

Sealants combine well with fluoride and regular cleanings to give kids the strongest possible head start. Many of our Culpeper families ask about sealants at the same checkup where their child first gets a six-year molar.
