Tooth-Colored Fillings

A small repair,
invisibly done.

Modern composite fillings restore a cavity quickly, bond directly to your tooth, and look so natural that no one will see them when you laugh.

Why we choose composite

Culpeper Dental Care is a mercury-free practice. Every filling we place is a tooth-colored composite resin — chosen for both its aesthetics and its real performance benefits over old-style silver fillings.

  • Bonded for strength. Composite chemically bonds to the tooth, supporting it instead of just sitting in a hole.
  • Less drilling. Because composite bonds in place, we can remove only the decayed portion and leave more healthy tooth behind.
  • Looks like your tooth. Shade-matched so it disappears into the surrounding enamel.
  • Mercury-free. No silver/amalgam, no metal expansion or contraction over time.

What the appointment is like

Most fillings take 30–45 minutes. We numb the tooth thoroughly — you’ll feel pressure and vibration, but not pain. Dr. Sanie removes the decay, prepares the surface, places the composite in layers, and hardens it with a curing light. We shape and polish it to match your bite. You’ll be eating normally within an hour or two as the numbness wears off.

Replacing older silver fillings

If you have silver/amalgam fillings from years ago, you’re not required to have them removed — but if one is cracking, leaking, or you simply don’t love how they look, we can swap them out for tooth-colored composite. Many patients tell us they wish they’d done it sooner.

Anxiety-friendly options

If even a small filling makes you tense, tell us at booking. We’ll take extra time, walk you through every step before we do it, and agree on a hand signal so you can pause us anytime — no questions, no rush.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a tooth-colored filling cost in Culpeper, VA?

A single tooth-colored composite filling at Culpeper Dental Care typically ranges from $200 to $400 depending on the size of the cavity and the tooth being treated. Most dental insurance plans cover composite fillings at the same rate as silver — we file the claim for you and provide a written estimate of any out-of-pocket portion before treatment begins.

How long does a composite filling last?

Modern tooth-colored fillings typically last 7–15 years with good home care. Smaller fillings on front teeth often last longer; larger fillings on back teeth (which take more chewing force) sometimes need replacement sooner. We check every filling at each six-month exam and let you know early if one is starting to wear out.

Does it hurt to get a filling?

No. We numb the tooth thoroughly with local anesthetic before any drilling — you'll feel pressure and vibration, but not pain. A topical gel goes on before the injection so even the numbing barely registers. Once it's set, the filling itself is comfortable.

Can I eat after a filling?

Yes — once the numbness wears off (usually 1–2 hours). With composite fillings we use a curing light to harden the material right in the chair, so there's no waiting period like older materials required. We'll let you know if anything specific applies to your visit.

Why doesn't Culpeper Dental Care use silver/amalgam fillings?

We're a mercury-free practice. Composite resin bonds chemically to your tooth — it actually supports the tooth structure — and we can remove less healthy tooth to place it. Silver fillings sit in a hole, expand and contract with temperature, and can crack the tooth over time. The aesthetic improvement is the bonus, not the reason.

Should I replace my old silver fillings?

Not automatically. If an old silver filling is intact, sealed, and not causing problems, we leave it alone. If it's cracking, leaking, or you simply don't love the look, we can swap it for tooth-colored composite at your convenience. Many patients tell us afterwards they wish they'd done it sooner.
