Porcelain Inlays & Onlays
Stronger than a filling,
more conservative than a crown.
When a tooth has too much damage for a filling but doesn’t need a full crown, an inlay or onlay restores it beautifully — and preserves more of your natural tooth.
What they are
Inlays and onlays are custom-crafted, tooth-colored restorations that fit precisely into a prepared tooth and bond into place. An inlay sits within the cusps of the tooth (think of it filling a small valley). An onlay covers one or more of the cusps (the high points) — a kind of partial crown. Both add real strength back to the tooth.
Why we love them
- Conservative. Less of your natural tooth is removed compared to a full crown.
- Strong. A bonded porcelain onlay can actually increase the strength of a damaged tooth by up to 75%.
- Beautiful. Porcelain mimics enamel’s translucency so well most people can’t tell which tooth was treated.
- Long-lasting. Properly cared for, an inlay or onlay can last decades.
What the visit looks like
The process usually takes two visits. At the first, Dr. Sanie removes the damaged tooth structure, takes a digital scan, and places a temporary while a lab crafts your custom restoration. At the second visit, the temporary comes off and your inlay or onlay is bonded precisely into place. We adjust the bite, polish it, and send you on your way.
Mercury-free, by the way
We’re a mercury-free practice. If you have older silver/amalgam fillings that are wearing down, an inlay or onlay can be a strong, aesthetic upgrade — protecting the tooth long term and removing the dark spot from your smile.
