Implants vs. Dentures

Two real options,
for very different lives.

If you’re weighing implants against dentures, here’s an honest comparison — what each does well, what they cost, and how to choose the right path for your mouth.

The short version

Dental implants are a permanent, surgical replacement for missing teeth — a higher upfront investment that often lasts decades. Traditional dentures are removable and more affordable upfront, but require regular relines and eventual replacement, and they don’t prevent the slow loss of jawbone that follows tooth loss. The right choice depends on your priorities, your health, and your budget.

Comfort and confidence

Implants don’t move. You don’t take them out. You don’t need adhesive. For many patients, that alone is the deciding factor — especially if you’ve lived with a denture that slips during dinner or makes certain words harder to say. Modern dentures are well-fitting, but no removable appliance feels exactly like real teeth.

Bone preservation

When a tooth is missing, the bone underneath slowly shrinks because nothing is stimulating it. Implants act like natural roots and prevent that loss. Dentures sit on top of the gum and don’t — meaning over years of wear, your jaw shape changes and your denture needs to be relined to fit. Many longtime denture wearers see facial changes that implants would have prevented.

Cost over time

A single implant with crown costs more upfront than a partial denture. But implants commonly last 20 years or longer with good care, while dentures typically need to be relined every few years and replaced every 5–10. Over a lifetime, the cost difference often narrows considerably.

Hybrid options worth knowing

You don’t have to choose all-or-nothing. Implant-supported overdentures use two to four implants to anchor a denture firmly in place — keeping much of the cost advantage of a denture while giving you the security of implant retention. All-on-4 is another option that replaces an entire arch with just four implants and a fixed bridge.

Health considerations

Implants require enough bone to anchor the post; in some cases a small graft is needed first. They’re not the right choice for patients with certain medical conditions or heavy smokers unwilling to quit. Dr. Sanie will give you a straight answer about candidacy after a 3D CBCT scan and exam.
