Dental Abscess

If you suspect an abscess,
we’re here today.

A dental abscess is a pocket of infection that can spread quickly. Call 540-418-0825 — we keep emergency time open and will see you the same day whenever possible.

Signs you may have an abscess

  • Throbbing, persistent pain in a specific tooth
  • Sensitivity that lingers long after hot or cold
  • Swelling in the gum, cheek, or jaw
  • A pimple-like bump on the gum that may drain a bad taste
  • Tenderness when chewing or touching the area
  • Fever, swollen lymph nodes, or general feeling of being unwell

When it’s a serious emergency

If you have facial swelling that affects breathing or swallowing, a high fever, or rapidly worsening pain, please call us immediately and head to an emergency room if you can’t reach us. Untreated dental infections can spread into the surrounding tissues, and in rare cases beyond — fast care matters.

What treatment looks like

The first goal is to relieve pressure and address the infection. Depending on the situation, Dr. Sanie may:

  • Prescribe antibiotics to bring the infection down
  • Drain the abscess to relieve pressure (often dramatically reducing pain within minutes)
  • Perform a root canal to remove the infected nerve and save the tooth
  • In some cases, recommend an extraction if the tooth can’t be saved

What you can do until your visit

  • Rinse with warm salt water several times a day.
  • Take ibuprofen or acetaminophen as directed (avoid placing aspirin against the gum).
  • Apply a cold compress on the cheek for swelling.
  • Avoid extreme temperatures of food and drink, and don’t chew on that side.
  • Don’t try to lance or pop the abscess yourself — it can spread the infection.

Preventing the next one

Most abscesses come from cavities that reached the nerve, gum disease, or cracks that let bacteria in. Steady cleanings, early treatment of cavities, and addressing grinding all significantly reduce the risk.
