Emergency Extractions
When a tooth has to come out
and it can’t wait.
If a tooth is causing severe pain, infection, or trauma that can’t be repaired, an extraction may be the kindest, fastest path to relief. We do them comfortably and same-day when needed.
When an extraction is the right call
- A tooth shattered below the gum line that can’t be rebuilt
- Severe infection that hasn’t responded to antibiotics or root canal therapy
- Advanced bone loss that no longer supports the tooth
- A wisdom tooth that’s impacted, infected, or causing severe pain
- A tooth that has split vertically through the root
Comfort during the visit
We numb the area thoroughly and wait until you’re fully comfortable before beginning. If you’re anxious, ask about nitrous oxide — it takes the edge off in seconds and wears off before you drive home. Most patients tell us afterward the procedure was much easier than they expected.
Healing well at home
- Bite gently on the gauze we provide for 30–60 minutes to let a clot form.
- Soft foods only for the first day or two — soup, yogurt, mashed potatoes, eggs.
- No straws, no smoking, and no spitting forcefully for at least 48 hours. These can dislodge the clot and cause a painful condition called dry socket.
- Starting 24 hours after, rinse gently with warm salt water three times a day.
- Take any prescribed medications as directed. Call us if swelling worsens after day three or pain isn’t improving.
What comes next
Most teeth are best replaced — not just for cosmetics, but because the empty space leads to neighboring teeth shifting and bone loss in the jaw. At your extraction visit (or shortly after), Dr. Sanie will talk through replacement options: typically a single-tooth dental implant, a bridge, or a partial denture. There’s no rush — we’ll give you time and information to decide what’s right for you.
Cost and coverage
Most insurance plans cover a portion of medically necessary extractions. If you’re uninsured, the Virginia Dental Club includes discounted extractions and emergency exam fees — making care accessible when you need it most.
