Sedation Dentistry
If you're anxious,
we can help.
Nitrous oxide — sometimes called 'laughing gas' — is a safe, mild sedation option that helps you stay relaxed and comfortable during any procedure at Culpeper Dental Care.
What nitrous oxide does
Nitrous oxide is a colorless, mildly sweet gas you breathe through a small nasal mask. It helps you feel relaxed, sometimes a little floaty — but you stay fully awake and able to communicate. Within a few minutes of the mask coming off, you’re back to normal and can drive yourself home.
Who it’s right for
- Patients who feel nervous before or during dental visits
- Children who need help sitting still for treatment
- Anyone with a strong gag reflex
- Patients undergoing longer procedures (implants, root canals, multiple fillings)
- Anyone who’d simply prefer to be more comfortable
How a sedation appointment works in Culpeper
When you arrive, we’ll review your medical history and confirm nitrous oxide is appropriate for you. The mask goes over your nose — it’s comfortable and you can talk through it. The gas takes effect within a couple of minutes. We adjust the concentration to your comfort throughout the procedure. When we’re finished, we switch you to pure oxygen for a few minutes, the effects clear, and you walk out fully alert.
Nitrous oxide vs. oral sedation vs. IV sedation
We offer nitrous oxide. It’s the most common form of dental sedation and meets the needs of nearly every patient who comes in anxious. For patients who need a deeper level of sedation (extensive surgical procedures, severe phobia), we work with referral partners who provide oral conscious sedation or IV sedation when clinically appropriate.
What it costs
Nitrous oxide typically adds $50–$90 to a routine appointment. Some dental insurance plans cover it for medically necessary procedures. Virginia Dental Club members receive a member discount on all add-on services. Whatever the cost, we’d much rather you get the care you need comfortably than skip it because you’re afraid.
Just tell us
When you call to schedule, mention that you’d like nitrous oxide. There’s no shame in needing help — many of our patients do. We’ll plan accordingly, build in extra time, and make sure your visit is the calmest one you’ve had.
Frequently asked questions
How quickly does it wear off?
Within minutes of the mask coming off. You can drive yourself home, return to work, and continue your day normally. No residual drowsiness, no aftereffects.
Can I eat before?
Yes — light food is fine before nitrous oxide. We recommend not eating a heavy meal right before, simply to keep your stomach comfortable.
What about pregnancy?
We avoid nitrous oxide during the first trimester. After that, and with your obstetrician’s approval, it’s often safe — but we typically defer non-urgent treatment until post-partum where possible. Tell us if you’re pregnant or might be.
