How Invisalign Works
A series of clear aligners,
moving your teeth gently into place.
Invisalign isn’t magic — it’s precision dentistry. Here’s exactly how clear aligners straighten teeth, what each step looks like, and what your timeline will probably be.
The basic idea
Each Invisalign aligner is a thin, custom-made tray that fits snugly over your teeth. The tray is shaped slightly differently from your current bite — when you wear it, it gently encourages your teeth to move toward that target shape. Every week or two, you switch to the next aligner in the series, and your teeth take another small step.
Step 1 — Consultation and digital scan
At your first visit, Dr. Sanie examines your bite and takes a digital iTero scan of your teeth — no putty impressions. The scan becomes a precise 3D model of your mouth.
Step 2 — Treatment plan and preview
Dr. Sanie maps your tooth movements digitally, planning each stage of treatment. Before you commit to anything, you’ll see a preview of your final result — and a clear timeline. If Invisalign isn’t the right fit for your case, we’ll tell you.
Step 3 — Wearing your aligners
You wear each aligner about 22 hours a day, taking them out only to eat, drink anything but water, and brush. Each set is worn for about a week before being swapped for the next. Most patients adapt within a couple of days — initial pressure or slight speech changes settle quickly.
Step 4 — Brief check-ins
You’ll come in every 6 to 10 weeks so we can confirm your teeth are tracking on plan, hand you the next batch of aligners, and answer any questions. Visits are short.
Step 5 — Refinement and retention
When you finish your main series, sometimes a small refinement set is added to perfect the final position. Then you switch to a clear retainer — usually worn at night — to keep your teeth where we just put them. Skipping the retainer is the number one reason teeth shift back, so we take this step seriously.
Typical timeline
Most cases finish in 12 to 18 months. Simpler corrections can wrap in 6 months; more complex cases may take longer. Dr. Sanie will give you an estimate at your consultation and adjust it as treatment progresses.
Eating, exercising, and living with aligners
You can eat anything you want — just take the aligners out first. Drink water with them in; coffee, tea, soda, and wine come out. They’re comfortable enough that most people forget they’re wearing them within a week or two.
