Whether you have a damaged tooth or want to improve the appearance of your teeth, our team of dental professionals is here to help you achieve the smile you desire.

What Are Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns, also known as "caps," are custom-made restorations that cover the entire visible portion of a tooth above the gum line. They are used to strengthen and protect teeth that have been weakened by decay, fractures, or other damage. Crowns can also improve the appearance of discolored or misshapen teeth.

Crowns can be made from various materials, including porcelain, ceramic, metal, or a combination of these. At Culpeper Dental Care, we offer high-quality porcelain crowns designed to match the natural color and appearance of your teeth.

When Are Dental Crowns Recommended?

Dental crowns may be recommended for several reasons, including:

  • Restoration: Repairing a tooth that has been severely damaged by decay or trauma.

  • Protection: Safeguarding a tooth that has undergone root canal treatment.

  • Strengthening: Reinforcing a cracked or fractured tooth.

  • Cosmetic Improvement: Enhancing the appearance of a discolored or misshapen tooth.

  • Support: Anchoring a dental bridge.

  • Covering Implants: Placing over a dental implant.

The Dental Crown Process

The process of getting a dental crown typically involves two visits to our office:

  1. First Visit:

    • Examination: The dentist will examine your tooth and determine if a crown is necessary.

    • Preparation: The tooth will be prepared by removing any decay and reshaping it to accommodate the crown. Impressions of the tooth will be taken and sent to a dental laboratory to fabricate your custom crown. A temporary crown will be placed to protect your tooth while the permanent crown is being made.

  2. Second Visit:

    • Fitting: The temporary crown will be removed, and the permanent crown will be carefully fitted and cemented into place. Adjustments will be made as necessary to ensure a comfortable and secure fit.

Caring for Your Dental Crown

With proper care, dental crowns can last for many years. It is important to maintain good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing regularly and visiting our office for routine check-ups and cleanings. Avoiding hard or sticky foods can also help prevent damage to your crown.
