ARESTIN®

What is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease is a serious and common infection that affects the gums and can lead to tooth loss if untreated. This condition is caused by harmful bacteria that thrive in the pockets between the teeth and gums, areas that regular brushing and flossing cannot reach.

Causes and Consequences

  • Bacterial Infection: The primary cause of periodontal disease is the accumulation of bacterial plaque, a sticky, colorless film that constantly forms on your teeth. If not removed, plaque can harden into tartar, which can only be removed by a dental professional.

  • Gum Inflammation: The bacteria produce toxins that irritate the gums, causing them to become inflamed, swollen, and prone to bleeding. If this inflammation persists, it can lead to the separation of gums from the teeth, forming pockets where more bacteria can accumulate.

  • Tooth Loss: As the disease progresses, the supporting gum tissue and bone that hold teeth in place deteriorate, potentially leading to tooth loss.

Introduction to ARESTIN®

ARESTIN® is an antibiotic treatment specifically designed to target harmful bacteria in periodontal pockets. It is applied directly to the infected areas in the gums following the scaling and root planing procedure, which disrupts stubborn plaque and bacteria under the gum line.

  • How ARESTIN® Works: ARESTIN® contains minocycline, a broad-spectrum antibiotic. It is delivered in a powder form that is placed into the periodontal pockets. The powder adheres to the infected area and releases the antibiotic over time.

  • Immediate Action: ARESTIN® starts working immediately at the source of the infection and continues to fight bacteria for up to 30 days.

  • Long-Term Benefits: Clinical studies have demonstrated that ARESTIN® provides significantly better results than scaling and root planing alone for up to 90 days. It helps reduce inflammation, promotes healing, and prevents the progression of periodontal disease.

Benefits of ARESTIN®

  • Targeted Treatment: ARESTIN® is applied directly to the infected areas, ensuring that the antibiotic is concentrated where it is needed most.

  • Extended Release: The slow release of the antibiotic helps maintain therapeutic levels in the periodontal pockets over an extended period, enhancing its effectiveness.

  • Reduced Inflammation: By targeting the bacteria responsible for periodontal disease, ARESTIN® helps reduce gum inflammation and supports the healing process.
